America’s Mailbox for RVers: how the South Dakota address works
America’s Mailbox is a South Dakota mail forwarding service in Box Elder, Pennington County, just off I-90 near Rapid City. Unlike Escapees in South Dakota, it gives you one South Dakota address that takes your mail and packages, and it runs its own campground next door, which matters for South Dakota’s one-night-stay rule. This page covers its plans and prices, how it handles vehicle registration, and where its own FAQ is behind what South Dakota’s laws and forms say today. Everything was checked on 27 Oct 2026 from America’s Mailbox’s pages and South Dakota state sources. It is not legal advice.

Plans and prices (checked 27 Oct 2026)
From America’s Mailbox’s Rates & Plans page and each plan page. All prices are per year plus tax, and every plan has the same $25 one-time start-up fee per account.
| Plan | Yearly price | What it’s for (their words, shortened) | Suggested postage fund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | $169.99 | Home base and vehicle registration; up to 7 pieces of mail a year; limited or no address changes | $100–$150 |
| Silver | $189.99 | All mail forwarded, junk included; only occasional packages or special handling | $100–$150 |
| Gold | $209.99 | Junk mail removed before shipping; medium volume of mail and packages | $100–$150 on the overview, $100–$200 on the Gold page |
| Platinum | As low as $249.99 | Small businesses; large volume; worldwide forwarding; registered agent available | $200–$500 |
| Titanium Plus (scanning) | As low as $248.99 | Scan of the front of every envelope and package; inside scans on demand for an extra fee; 2 GB cloud storage | $250 |
| Short Term Titanium Plus | $89.99 for a 3-month minimum | Same scanning, “best for your extended vacation or trips” | $100–$150 |
- Monthly plans: the rates page says yearly and monthly memberships are both offered, with a 2-month minimum. It doesn’t list a monthly price, so ask.
- Vehicle registration needs a yearly plan. The Silver, Gold and Platinum pages say they register and renew your vehicle “on annual plans,” and the FAQ says registration-only customers need an annual plan (Bronze is built for that).
- Handling fees (for example oversized packages, or a shipment request when your box is empty) are set out in the Mail Service Agreement you sign, which isn’t posted as a price list. Ask for it before you join.
- Paying by card adds a convenience fee (amount not shown); check, money order or cash in person avoid it.
- Changing plans: upgrade any time at a prorated price; downgrade only on your anniversary, and never down to Bronze.
- Closing: the FAQ says you need to give 90 days’ written notice, and leftover postage funds are refunded.
A first year on paper
Using only the published numbers: Silver is $214.99 the first year ($189.99 + $25) and $189.99 after that, plus tax. Bronze is $194.99, then $169.99. Postage for every shipment comes out of your postage fund on top of that. The fund isn’t a fee; it’s your money held for postage, and the FAQ says it sits in a non-interest-bearing bank account. These are our sums from list prices, not a quote. Compare other services in RV mail forwarding services compared.
How it works day to day
- You can join long-distance by mail, FedEx, UPS, fax or email; you don’t need to be in South Dakota. The FAQ suggests setting up your address at least two months before you hit the road.
- Everyone who travels together year-round can share one account. You must list every name you might get mail under (maiden names, nicknames, closed business names). No one else may use your address, even for one letter.
- You schedule shipments yourself in your online account: when, where and how (USPS, UPS or FedEx). Each shipment goes to one address; you can’t split mail to one place and medicine to another.
- Your mail is packed overnight, before that day’s mail is sorted, so mail that arrives on your shipping day waits for the next shipment.
- The FAQ says it accepts properly addressed packages of any size (oversize handling costs extra) and can ship medications, including refrigerated ones. It can ship unloaded firearms but not ammunition.
- America’s Mailbox does not change your address with the Post Office for you. It asks members to contact senders one by one; if you use the paper USPS change-of-address card, write “PMB” before your 5-digit number on line 8a. Its FAQ says you can’t use the online USPS system for this.
- Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Mountain time; phone 605-718-1234. Email with your PMB number in the subject is their preferred contact.
Registering your RV through America’s Mailbox
From America’s Mailbox’s South Dakota Vehicle Registration page and FAQ (their claims, not state rules):
- You sign a notarized power of attorney and send the original title (or your lender’s title request), and their staff handles it at the Pennington County Treasurer, not the DMV. They say it can take 2 to 3 weeks with all documents, longer if a lender holds the title.
- For trailers, fifth wheels and motorhomes they need the unloaded (dry) weight: a manufacturer document, a photo of the spec sticker showing the VIN and weight, or a certified scale ticket.
- They say South Dakota requires no inspection and no proof of insurance to register, your vehicle never has to be in the state, and you can register with an out-of-state license using your Social Security number (no specialty plates until you have an SD license).
- They estimate RVs at $12 to $18 per thousand pounds of empty weight a year, with the first year prorated by the first letter of your last name. For exact state fees see our registration renewal guide.
- South Dakota’s 4% motor vehicle excise tax applies if you haven’t already paid at least that much to another state. The South Dakota Department of Revenue says new arrivals have 90 days to title and license a vehicle; America’s Mailbox says that on a new purchase taxed by South Dakota, penalties start on day 46.
What South Dakota actually asks (and where the FAQ is behind)
Driver license
- South Dakota’s Residency Affidavit (form dated 05/2024) is the full-timer route. It must come with a receipt for one night in a South Dakota RV park, campground or hotel, no more than one year old, plus a document under a year old showing your PMB address. You swear South Dakota is your home, you don’t keep a residence in another state, and your mailbox is “a mail forwarding service, and not a virtual only mail service.”
- America’s Mailbox’s license page matches this (it mentions the receipt “less than 1-year-old” and its own campground). But one FAQ answer still says one night every five years. Go by the state form: the receipt has to be from within the last year.
- The license fee in state law (SDCL 32-12-16) is now $38 for an original or renewal. The America’s Mailbox FAQ and license page still say $28 (and $33 for a CDL), which is the old figure.
- You can renew online or by mail only once every ten years as a full-timer; otherwise you go to a South Dakota exam station. More in driver license renewal from the road.
Jury duty
The America’s Mailbox FAQ and license page say that if you are called for jury duty, “you are excused.” South Dakota’s own Residency Affidavit says the opposite in plain words: driver license records are used for jury selection, and getting a South Dakota license or ID “will result in you being required to report for jury duty in South Dakota.” State law lets judges excuse people case by case, but don’t count on an automatic pass. How it works: jury duty for full-time RVers.
Voting
America’s Mailbox tells members to use their PMB as both residence and mailing address on the voter form. Under South Dakota law (SDCL 12-4-1.3, in effect from 2026), a county auditor must make you a federal-only voter if you give only a mail forwarding or commercial mailbox address as your residence without describing where you actually live. A federal-only ballot lists only president, U.S. Senate and U.S. House. If you want to vote in state and local races, ask the Pennington County Auditor how to describe your habitation. More in voting by mail for RVers.
Things a PMB can’t do
America’s Mailbox’s own FAQ says South Dakota no longer accepts a PMB as your physical address for unemployment insurance tax, and that people using a PMB address can no longer apply for a hunting or fishing license.
The campground next door
America’s Campground and Lodging sits by the mail building in Box Elder and is open year-round. Their page lists 90 sites (64 full hookup, 14 electric, 12 boondock) and a few guest rooms; rates vary by season, so ask when you book (605-718-1234). A one-night stay gets you the South Dakota receipt the state asks for, though any South Dakota RV park, campground or hotel receipt counts under the state’s rules.

Is America’s Mailbox the right pick?
- It fits if you want your mail, packages and plates all handled in South Dakota by one company, or you want to knock out the one-night stay at the same place.
- Think twice if you want a simple month-to-month bill with posted prices, or if you’d rather read every envelope on your phone without paying for Titanium.

Quick answers
How much is America’s Mailbox?
$169.99 (Bronze) to $249.99 (Platinum) a year plus tax, plus a one-time $25 start-up fee and a postage fund you keep topped up. Scanning (Titanium Plus) starts at $248.99 a year.
Does America’s Mailbox take packages?
Yes. Its FAQ says it accepts properly addressed packages of any size from USPS, UPS and FedEx, with an extra charge for oversize. Silver is meant for only occasional packages; Gold and Platinum for more.
Do I have to go to South Dakota?
Not to join or to register vehicles through them. For a South Dakota driver license, the state wants a receipt for one night in South Dakota within the last year.
Will I get out of jury duty?
Don’t assume it. South Dakota’s Residency Affidavit says a South Dakota license or ID will put you on the jury list.
