RVers start here: mail and paperwork, in the order you’ll need it
This page puts every WhichMailbox RV guide in one place, in the order most people hit them. Full-timers should work through steps 1 to 4 before the house is sold, then keep steps 5 to 8 handy on the road. Snowbirds who keep a house can usually skip to the snowbird path. Checked 21 Oct 2026. It is not legal or tax advice.
The full-timer path
-
1. Pick a home (domicile) state
South Dakota, Texas and Florida are the usual picks. Each one has its own rules for what proves you live there. South Dakota, for instance, asks full-timers renewing a license from the road for a receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground or RV park showing one night’s stay in the last year, in your name, plus a notarized Residency Affidavit if you renew online or by mail (SD DPS, checked 21 Oct 2026).
-
2. Choose an RV mail forwarding service in that state
RV forwarders (Escapees, America’s Mailbox, DakotaPost, St. Brendan’s Isle, Good Sam, American Home Base) are built around shipping your mail to wherever you are next. App-style virtual mailboxes scan mail well but are a different product. Read the fine print on how the address works: Escapees processes all mail in Texas, and its Florida and South Dakota addresses are for state mail only (license, registration, voter registration). Each piece sent there costs extra, and packages sent to those two addresses are returned to sender (Escapees domicile page, checked 21 Oct 2026).
-
3. Sign up the USPS way: Form 1583 and two IDs
Any private mailbox at a commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA) needs USPS Form 1583 and two forms of ID, one with a photo. USPS says mail can be forwarded to a CMRA but not from one, and Registered Mail has to be picked up at the local Post Office rather than at the mailbox company (USPS CMRA FAQ, checked 21 Oct 2026). If you close a box, the CMRA is responsible for forwarding your mail for six months.
-
4. Move your license, plates and voter registration
Do these while you are physically in your new home state if you can, since several steps are easier in person. Then learn how renewals work from the road, so nothing expires while you are three states away.

5. Packages and prescriptions
Not everything should go through your forwarder. USPS General Delivery, Amazon Locker and Counter, and UPS and FedEx holds can get a package to you where you are parked. Check what your forwarder refuses before you order.
-
6. Voting by mail
Absentee and vote-by-mail ballots can reach you through a forwarder, but timing is tight. Request early and know your state’s return deadline.
-
7. Jury summons
Your home county can summon you. Never ignore one: answer the day it reaches you, ask to postpone or be excused the way the summons says, and be careful about saying you don’t live in the county.
-
8. Renewals coming due
Put your license and registration renewal dates on a calendar with a few months’ warning. Some renewals need a document mailed back to you, and forwarding adds days.
The snowbird path (keeping a house)
If you keep a house and travel part of the year, you may not need an RV forwarder at all. USPS Hold Mail keeps mail at your Post Office for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days; for anything longer, USPS says to use a forwarding service (USPS Hold Mail page, checked 21 Oct 2026). The snowbird guide compares USPS temporary forwarding and Premium Forwarding with the part-year options some RV forwarders offer.

Where app mailboxes fit
Scan-first virtual mailboxes such as iPostal1 and Traveling Mailbox are handy for reading mail on your phone, and some RVers use one alongside their domicile forwarder. They are not a domicile address, and South Dakota’s license office says it won’t accept virtual addresses. Those two links are affiliate links; we may earn a referral fee at no cost to you. Prices are on the big-three comparison.
