DakotaPost for RVers: how the Sioux Falls address works
DakotaPost is a South Dakota mail forwarding service at 3916 N Potsdam Ave in Sioux Falls (Minnehaha County), just off I-229 at the Benson Road exit. It’s run by Alternative Resources, Inc. Like America’s Mailbox, it gives you one South Dakota street address with a PMB number that takes both mail and packages, and it can register your RV for you through the Minnehaha County Treasurer. This page covers its plans and fees, the extra charges that add up, how plates work, and where its own pages are behind South Dakota’s laws and fee tables. Everything was checked on 28 Oct 2026 from DakotaPost’s pages and South Dakota state sources. It is not legal advice.

Plans and prices (checked 28 Oct 2026)
From DakotaPost’s Mail Forwarding and Sign Up pages. Both plans are billed per year and carry the same $25 setup fee. At sign-up you also pick a postage deposit of $50, $100 or $150; that’s your money held for postage, not a fee.
| Plan | Yearly price | What you get (their words, shortened) |
|---|---|---|
| My DakotaMail Premium | Starting at $199 | Picture of the front of every piece in an online portal; mail forwarded on a regular schedule you pick: once a month, twice a month or once a week |
| My DakotaMail VIP | $259 | Everything in Premium, plus open-and-scan, shredding, and forwarding whenever and wherever you ask |
- “Starting at” $199: the Premium price is shown as a starting price next to the three schedule choices. The page doesn’t say whether weekly costs more than monthly, so ask when you call.
- Both plans include a junk mail presort, and DakotaPost says it can store mail for up to 13 months.
- Up to 4 names or entities per box (related people, trusts and businesses). Anyone not listed on the account can’t get mail there; that’s a USPS rule for every commercial mail receiving agency (CMRA).
The extra fees (from the DakotaPost FAQ)
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Handling, per First Class mailing sent to you | $2.00 plus postage |
| Handling, per package received | $2.00 |
| FedEx, DHL, Express or international mailing | $5.00 |
| Each mailing beyond your agreed schedule | $5.00 |
| VIP open a piece of mail | $1 per piece, plus $0.50 per page scanned |
| VIP mailing on request | $2 plus postage |
| Changing plans outside your renewal month | $25 (one free change in the first 6 months) |
A first year on paper
Using only the published numbers: Premium is $224 the first year ($199 + $25) and VIP is $284 ($259 + $25), before postage. Then add $2 for each mailing sent to you and $2 for each package that arrives. As an example of our own math, not a quote: a Premium customer on a monthly schedule who gets 20 packages in a year would pay 12 × $2 + 20 × $2 = $64 in handling on top of the plan and postage. How it works day to day
- Your address is their street address with your PMB number, written like this: John and Susan Doe, 3916 N Potsdam Ave PMB 1234, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. The PMB number has to be on every piece.
- DakotaPost says it’s a real street address, not a PO Box, so it takes mail and packages from USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL and other carriers. It ships out by USPS, FedEx and DHL (UPS isn’t listed for outgoing shipments).
- You ask for mail online in your My DakotaMail account, by email to office@dakotapost.net, or by phone. Online requests made before midnight Central go out the next business day. Requests made after 5pm Friday through Sunday are processed and mailed Monday.
- On VIP, and on Premium if you ask for a one-off date, your box goes on hold after each shipment until you request mail again. Handy when you’re parked for a while, but easy to forget.
- Scans you ask for are done the day after you request them.
- You can pick up in person Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, with photo ID. Phone (605) 332-3711, toll-free (800) 477-2664.
- DakotaPost says it offers free notary service to its customers, which helps with the USPS Form 1583 every mailbox customer signs, and with South Dakota’s Residency Affidavit, which must be signed in front of a notary or a South Dakota license examiner.
Registering your RV through DakotaPost
From DakotaPost’s Vehicle Registration and License Plates pages (their claims, except where we name a state source):
- Vehicles have to be registered in the county of your South Dakota address. For DakotaPost that’s Minnehaha County, and DakotaPost acts as your proxy with the Minnehaha County Treasurer. You set up an appointment by phone; it can be done over the phone and through the mail. You must already be signed up for mail forwarding.
- Its registration pricing grid shows $200, $400, $600 and $800 plus sales tax for 1, 2, 3 and 4 vehicles, with a $50 non-refundable deposit by card when you book. The page says “all appointment fees are non-refundable.” It doesn’t spell out whether that grid is DakotaPost’s service charge on top of state and county fees, so ask before you book.
- For motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels and other trailers they need paperwork showing the unloaded vehicle weight, because that’s what South Dakota license fees are based on.
- The Minnehaha County Treasurer takes a cashier’s check, money order or credit card, and never a personal check, according to DakotaPost.
- DakotaPost won’t process commercial or leased vehicles; it sends those to the Minnehaha County Treasurer.
- The $100 non-resident fee (state rule). The South Dakota Department of Revenue charges an extra $100 when you title a vehicle without a South Dakota driver license or ID and without a physical South Dakota address, and it says outright that “P.O. boxes and mail forwarding addresses do not count.” DakotaPost’s page says the same. Getting your South Dakota license first avoids it.
- Fee details that don’t match. DakotaPost’s plates page lists a $4 technology fee; the Department of Revenue’s fee table tonight shows $2 (in effect since 1 July 2025). The state also lists a $10 title fee, $10 lien notation, $1 solid waste, $1 highway patrol, a 4% excise tax on the purchase price, and a late title fee of $1 a week past the 45-day grace period (up to $50). Wheel tax varies by county. For yearly RV fees by weight, see our registration renewal guide.
- The Department of Revenue gives new arrivals 90 days to title and license a vehicle in South Dakota, and gives credit for sales tax paid to another state.
What South Dakota actually asks (and where DakotaPost’s FAQ is behind)
Driver license
- South Dakota’s Residency Affidavit (form dated 05/2024) is the full-timer route. It needs a receipt for one night in a South Dakota RV park, campground or hotel, no more than one year old, plus a document under a year old showing your PMB address (a receipt from the PMB business or a piece of mail with the PMB on it). You swear that South Dakota is your home, that you don’t keep a residence in another state, and that your mailbox is “a mail forwarding service, and not a virtual only mail service.”
- DakotaPost markets a “virtual mailbox” alongside its forwarding plans. Its own license page repeats the state line that “virtual addresses and virtual postal addresses are not acceptable.” If South Dakota residency is your goal, sign up for a mail forwarding plan and keep a DakotaPost PMB receipt for your license visit.
- DakotaPost doesn’t run a campground. Its residency page says to stay one night at a local hotel or campground and use your new South Dakota address when you check in. That matches the state form, which wants your name and South Dakota address on the receipt.
- The DakotaPost FAQ still says a license costs $28, cash only. State law (SDCL 32-12-16, amended in 2025) now sets the original or renewal fee at $38. Check payment options with the exam station when you book.
- Full-timers can renew online or by mail only once every ten years; otherwise it’s back to a South Dakota exam station. More in driver license renewal from the road.
Jury duty
DakotaPost doesn’t promise you’ll be excused, which is good, because the state’s Residency Affidavit says plainly that driver license records are used for jury selection and that a South Dakota license or ID “will result in you being required to report for jury duty in South Dakota.” With a Sioux Falls address that means Minnehaha County. How summons, postponements and excuses work: jury duty for full-time RVers.
Voting
Under SDCL 12-4-1.3 (from 2026), a county auditor must make you a federal-only voter if your registration or absentee application gives only a mail forwarding or commercial mailbox address as your residence, without describing where you actually live. A federal-only ballot lists only president, U.S. Senate and U.S. House. If you want to vote in state and local races, ask the Minnehaha County Auditor how to describe your habitation. More in voting by mail for RVers.

Is DakotaPost the right pick?
- It fits if you want simple yearly pricing, a choice of monthly, twice-monthly or weekly shipments, and help with plates over the phone. Sioux Falls is also on I-29 and I-90 if you pass through eastern South Dakota.
- Think twice if you get lots of packages (each one adds $2), or if you want to sign up and pay online today.
- Not set on South Dakota? Compare states in our SD vs Texas vs Florida domicile guide.
Quick answers
How much is DakotaPost?
Premium starts at $199 a year and VIP is $259 a year, plus a one-time $25 setup fee, postage, and $2 handling for each mailing sent and each package received.
Does DakotaPost take packages?
Yes. It says its street address takes packages from all carriers, with a $2 handling fee per package received.
Do I have to go to South Dakota?
Not to sign up or to register vehicles through them. For a South Dakota driver license you go to an exam station in person the first time, with a receipt for one night in South Dakota from within the last year.
Can I use DakotaPost’s address to vote?
You can register, but if you list only the PMB as your residence with no description of where you live, South Dakota law makes you a federal-only voter.
