Checks and packages: the add-ons that blow up a $10 plan
The monthly price is rent on a PMB and some scans. The bill shows up when a check, a laptop, or a weekly forward to another country arrives. Read the extra-fee column before you redirect a marketplace seller or a payroll company. Reviewed against provider pages on 9 Oct 2026.
What “check deposit” usually means here
For the providers below, check deposit is not remote-deposit-capture into the mailbox company’s own bank. It is a physical check they endorse and mail to your bank (with a deposit slip and tracking, in the designs we read). Your bank can still reject it. Mobile-deposit of a scanned PDF depends entirely on that bank’s rules; many banks forbid depositing a copy. We are not telling you to try it. See also banks, Stripe, Mercury.

Bank caveats (do not skip)
- Mail-in deposit is a bank feature, not a mailbox guarantee. Online-only banks sometimes refuse paper checks entirely.
- Traveling Mailbox’s FAQ says “All banks accept deposits via checks mailed to them” and that most have a dedicated mail-in address — that is their marketing line. Treat it as a prompt to look up your bank’s mail-in address and rules, not as proof every bank will take every check.
- VirtualPostMail explicitly requires the payee name to match the account and that the bank supports mail-in deposit.
- A CMRA street address used for banking KYC is a separate fight from check deposit. Read banks, Stripe, Mercury.
Packages: why people leave PO Boxes
A CMRA street address can usually take USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL because a person signs at a commercial door. A traditional PO Box cannot. That is still the main reason people leave USPS boxes. Confirm carriers on the live location card — some prestige buildings refuse certain carriers or oversize freight.
- Traveling Mailbox storage: first 30 days of package storage free, then $0.10 per lb per day (pricing page, 9 Oct 2026). They say they receive any size at the Sanford, NC warehouse (RFID, climate control). If you use a satellite address, ask whether parcels forward to Sanford before you ship something time-sensitive.
- Traveling Mailbox envelopes: physical envelopes held free 30 days, then shredded unless you place a hold ($1 per envelope per month after that). Digital scans stay until you delete them.
- iPostal1: receive from USPS/FedEx/UPS/DHL at street addresses; forwarding uses real-time carrier quotes in the app. Storage windows vary by location cube — read that store.
- Anytime Mailbox: forward, shred, recycle, schedule pickup, and (select locations) check deposit — operator-set rates on the store card.
- VirtualPostMail: packages stored on-site; consolidating multiple parcels into one outbound shipment is their published way to cut postage. Most shipping requests processed within 1 business day on their package-forwarding page — confirm live.
- Oversize / prohibited: networks often surcharge pallets and refuse perishables, alcohol, firearms, ammo, and hazmat. Ask before you ship a fridge.
Forwarding math
USPS will not change-of-address your PMB to a hotel room as if it were a residential move. The CMRA pays new postage. Typical published handling (confirm live — these are operator claims, not our quotes):
- Traveling Mailbox: postage + $2 per shipment (not per piece). Consolidate freely. USPS, FedEx, and UPS available in their calculator.
- iPostal1: real-time carrier quotes in the app; they advertise discounted international forwarding from listed locations (up to 80% off retail postage — their number, verify at checkout).
- Anytime Mailbox: operator-set; read that store’s rate card.
- VirtualPostMail: consolidate + choose carrier/insurance/signature options; dollar amount is quote-based.
- PostScan Mail / St. Brendan’s Isle / Escapees / America’s Mailbox: confirm in-app or on their current rate card before you treat a third-party “about $2” figure as gospel.
International forwarding is postage plus customs hassle. A “$9.99 mailbox” plus a weekly box to Portugal is a shipping business, not a $9.99 business. Fee cheat sheet: fees.
How to keep the bill boring
- Mark junk for shred. Traveling Mailbox does not count junk against envelope limits if you mark it junk.
- Scan and shred instead of forwarding letters you only needed to read.
- Batch forwards and checks (Traveling Mailbox and VirtualPostMail both push consolidation).
- Do not use a prestige Manhattan PMB as an Amazon locker unless you like prestige storage fees.
- If you live on paper checks, pick a provider whose support page still says they do deposits — PostScan’s answer is still no.
- If you only need pickup in one city a few times a year, a company scanning hub may be cheaper than city rent; if you need the door weekly, pay for the city. City lists start at NYC / Austin / Miami / Chicago / Seattle.
