Renewing your RV registration from the road: South Dakota, Texas and Florida

If you live in your rig, your plates and stickers come up for renewal while you are hundreds of miles from home base. The renewal notice goes to the address on your vehicle record (usually your mail forwarder), and the new sticker gets mailed back there too. This page lays out what the South Dakota, Texas and Florida motor vehicle offices publish about renewing online, by mail and while out of state, checked on 17 Oct 2026. It is not legal advice. Fees change, so the number on your own renewal notice is the one that counts.

The short version. Renew early, because the sticker still has to travel from the state to your forwarder and then on to you. South Dakota’s online renewal needs a valid SD driver license or ID. Texas lets you self-certify that the vehicle is out of state if your county needs an emissions test, but you owe that test within 3 days of getting back to Texas. Florida renews online for one or two years, up to three months early, and won’t issue a registration if it can’t verify your insurance.

Online or Texas by Texas app, from 90 days before expiration to 12 months after (if you haven’t been cited). Two-business-day payment hold, then allow up to three weeks for processing and mailing. MyDMV Portal: one or two years, credit card, $2.00 processing fee, registration mailed in 7–10 business days. MyFlorida app: up to five vehicles at once, $4.00 by card or $3.75 by checking account.
By mail Mail the renewal postcard and payment to your county treasurer. Checks (in-state only), cashier’s checks or money orders. Add $12.00 postage per plate(s) and $2.50 per decal(s), and write your DL or ID number on the postcard. Allow two weeks. Mail the renewal notice, proof of insurance, all fees, and a copy of your inspection report if your county needs emissions testing, to your county tax office. The state renewal page lists online, app and in-office renewal. Ask your county tax collector whether it takes mail renewals.
Out of state at renewal time No separate out-of-state step is published. Online renewal still needs your SD license or ID. Self-certify online, or by mail with a written statement that the vehicle is out of state. Get an emissions test within 3 days of returning (emissions counties only). Online and app work if FLHSMV can verify your insurance. Any “stop” on the record means calling (850) 617-2000 or going to an office.
If you are late The DOR says law enforcement may ticket for driving on expired plates. You can drive up to five working days after expiration without penalty. After that, the citation can be up to $200. The renewal page lists no grace period. Since 1 Jul 2022, unpaid toll violations can block renewal.

South Dakota

South Dakota titles and registers through each county treasurer. The Department of Revenue lists four ways to renew: in person at the treasurer, by mail through the county, online through the Vehicle Registration & Plates portal, or at a DMV Now self-service kiosk. The kiosks are in South Dakota towns, so for full-timers on the road it really comes down to online or mail.

What RVs cost to renew in SD. Plate fees go by weight and age. The DOR’s staggered non-commercial motorhome schedule (post 4/1/2015) shows, for example, a 10,001–12,000 lb motorhome at $18.00 a month ($216.00 for 12 months) if it is 0–9 years old, or $12.60 a month ($151.20) if it is 10 or more years old. On the trailer schedule, a 7,001–8,000 lb trailer is $12.00 a month ($144.00) at 0–9 years or $8.40 ($100.80) at 10+ years. On top of that you pay a county wheel tax, a $1 solid waste fee, a $1 highway patrol fee, and a $2 technology fee (added 1 Jul 2025). Look up your own weight row on the motorhome or trailer fee schedule.

Titling a new rig is a separate step. The DOR adds a $100 fee if you have no SD driver license or ID and no physical SD address, and it says PO boxes and mail-forwarding addresses don’t count. More on that in the domicile guide.

Texas

Texas renews through your county tax office, online through TxDMV, or in the Texas by Texas (TxT) app. Since 1 Jan 2025, non-commercial vehicles don’t need a safety inspection to register. Seventeen counties still need an emissions test: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson.

What RVs cost to renew in TX. TxDMV lists a $45 base fee for trailers and travel trailers up to 6,000 lb, $50.75 for cars and light trucks, and $54 for 6,001–10,000 lb vehicles. Motor homes are charged by weight class (ask your county tax office for your class). Every renewal also has the $7.50 Inspection Replacement Fee, a $4.75 processing and handling fee, and county local fees from $0 to $31.50.

One caution from TxDMV’s own FAQ: it says a Texan “currently living out of state” must register in the state where they live now, with students and active military as the exceptions. Full-timers whose home state really is Texas use the self-certify route above. If your situation is murky, ask your county tax office before you renew.

Florida

Florida registrations expire at midnight on the first owner’s birthday. You can renew for one or two years, and up to three months early. That two-year option is handy if you’ll be far away next year.

What RVs cost in FL. FLHSMV’s fee page lists the base tax only for recreational vehicles: $27.00 for a 5th wheel, $13.50 for a camping trailer, $27.00 under 4,500 lb and $47.50 over 4,500 lb. It says other statutory fees apply on top, so your total will be higher. A rig never registered in Florida before also owes the $225 initial registration fee.

Making it work with a mail forwarder

  1. Put your forwarder on the vehicle record. Renewal notices and stickers go to the address the DMV has. In South Dakota, change it before renewing.
  2. Sign up for email reminders where offered (SD portal opt-in, Texas eReminder). A postcard can sit in a forwarder bin for weeks.
  3. Renew early and add mailing time. The state’s own estimate (Texas up to three weeks, Florida 7–10 business days, SD mail renewals two weeks) is only the trip to your forwarder. Add the time for your next shipment from the forwarder to wherever you’re parked.
  4. Ask your forwarder to ship DMV mail promptly, or have them scan the envelope so you know it arrived. If you use a scan-first mailbox like Traveling Mailbox or iPostal1 for everyday mail, remember those don’t sell SD, Texas or Florida domicile addresses. Your DMV record needs to match the address your state accepts.
  5. Keep proof in the rig. Keep your emailed receipt (FL), MyFlorida digital document, or Texas inspection report handy until the sticker is on the plate.
