American Home Base for RVers: how the Pensacola, Florida mail service works
American Home Base, Inc. is a Florida mail forwarding service in Pensacola (Escambia County, at the far west end of the Panhandle). Its site says it has served full-time and part-time travelers since 1990, is registered with USPS as a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), and has had more than 21,000 customers. You get a P.O. box plus a Florida street address, and it ships your mail to you on the schedule you pick. Its monthly price is low and its fee list is short and fully posted. This page covers the plans, every posted fee, how the address works for Florida residency, and where its pages are older than the state’s current rules. Everything was checked on 30 Oct 2026 from American Home Base’s pages and Florida state and Escambia County sources. It is not legal advice.

Plans and prices (checked 30 Oct 2026)
From American Home Base’s Mail Services page, Service Plans page and online registration form.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Shipments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $12.50 | $150.00 | One mailing a week (extra weekly mailings $3 each) |
| Unlimited | $17.50 | $189.00 (the form calls it a 10% discount) | Up to five mailings a week, federal holidays excluded |
- One-time costs: a $10 account setup fee and a $20 initial postage deposit. Your first payment covers the first month, the deposit and the setup fee, by check, money order, Visa, Mastercard or Discover.
- How billing works: the monthly fee is billed in advance on the 1st. Postage and handling for last month’s mailings are billed at the same time. You can prepay, and they ask customers who don’t use automatic card payments to keep a credit balance. You get a monthly statement.
- Both plans include a street address for residency paperwork, same-day shipping if you call by 2:00 p.m. Central, throwing out junk mail and catalogs if you ask, an operator who will look for a specific piece of mail, setting up mailings on the website, and a live person 9 to 5 Central, Monday to Friday.
- Unlimited adds an operator going through all of your mail with you on the phone, tracking numbers emailed automatically, and email alerts for jury summons and certified or registered mail. On Basic, a phone sort is $3 each time.
Every other posted fee
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Handling on each domestic shipment | $2.00 plus actual postage |
| Handling on each international shipment | $5.00 plus actual postage |
| Mail scanning | $2.50 per letter |
| Fax | $2.50 for four pages |
| Extra weekly mailing (Basic) | $3.00 |
| Custom mail sort with an operator (Basic) | $3.00 |
| Combining several packages into one | $5.00 domestic, $10.00 international |
| Vehicle registration done for you | $150.00 per vehicle (state and county fees are extra) |
| Vehicle registration renewal done for you | $50.00 per vehicle |
| Emergency locator service | No extra cost |
Their FAQ says there’s no charge for packaging or supplies. Other charges can come up if you insure a package or ship overseas with customs duties or taxes.
A first year on paper
Using only the published numbers, a yearly Basic plan is $160 the first year ($150 + $10 setup) and a yearly Unlimited plan is $199 ($189 + $10), before postage. The $20 deposit is your own money for postage, not a fee. As an example of our own math, not a quote: a weekly shipment on Basic adds 52 × $2 = $104 a year in handling, plus whatever the postage comes to. Someone who has mail sent once a month on Unlimited would pay 12 × $2 = $24 in handling. Compare the other services in RV mail forwarding services compared.
How it works day to day
- Signing up: fill in the online registration form. They mail you a welcome letter with your new address. You then complete USPS Form 1583 so they can legally act as your mail agent, and file a change of address with USPS. More on the form: Form 1583 and notary.
- Two addresses: each customer gets a P.O. box and a separate street address. Their FAQ says they prefer most mail go to the P.O. box because it gets to you faster, and that “necessary mail and packages” can go to the street address. The street address itself isn’t shown on their public pages; it comes in the welcome letter.
- Getting your mail: pick the day or days of the week, or certain days of the month, have it held, or ask for one shipment at a time. Mail can be held for up to six months. You can change your shipping address as often as you like, any time, through their online portal, or by phone or email during business hours.
- Carriers: the sign-up form lists USPS First-Class, Priority, Priority with delivery confirmation and Express, FedEx (AM, PM, 2-Day, 3-Day, Ground, Home and International), and international Airmail, Priority and Express.
- Packages: yes. Their FAQ says they sign for parcels and send them on with your next mailing. Their pages don’t post a package size limit or a storage fee; the six-month hold is the only limit mentioned.
- Family on the road with you: anyone in your party can get mail at your box once they complete their own Form 1583. Their mail ships with yours and isn’t sorted separately.
- Outgoing mail: you can send them mail, stamped or not, and they’ll mail it from Pensacola for postage only.
- Pick it up in person during office hours when you’re in town, at no charge.
- Emergency locator: family can call (850) 857-0860 in a life- or property-threatening emergency, and the staff will help reach you, at no extra cost.
- Hours and holidays: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Central. Closed New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and the Friday after, and Christmas, with no mail forwarding on December 24. Contact: (850) 857-0860, P.O. Box 2430, Pensacola, FL 32513.
Their site doesn’t mention a way to pause the account, a mobile app, or included scans. If you’re a snowbird who only needs mail handled part of the year, ask how a month-to-month account starts and stops, and read our snowbird and RV mail forwarding guide.
Using the address for Florida residency
American Home Base’s own FAQ is plain about this: using the service does not make you a Florida resident. It gives you a street address that “can help” if you choose to become one. Here’s what its pages say and what the state and county say tonight.
What American Home Base’s pages say
- The street address “can be used to obtain a driver’s license, register vehicles, checking account, etc.”
- Florida has no state income tax, no personal property tax and no vehicle inspections or emissions tests, and registration renewals can be done by mail or online.
- Actions that show intent to become a Florida resident include filing a Declaration of Domicile at a county courthouse, getting a Florida license, registering to vote, and declaring Florida on your tax return.
- Voting: “May I use my street address for voter registration? No.” Their FAQ says the elections office has customers use the county courthouse as their voting district, so you can vote in state and federal races but not local ones. That is American Home Base’s description; we did not find it on the Escambia County elections site (see below).
Where their pages are out of date
- New-registration table: labeled “Website rates updated April 2010.” It lists a $85.75 title fee; FLHSMV’s fee table tonight shows $85.25 for an original electronic title on a used vehicle (plus $2.50 if a paper title is printed). Its $225 initial registration and $28 plate figures still match the state.
- Renewal table: labeled “updated June 2015,” with $58.85 for a motorhome and $38.60 for a 5th wheel. Treat these as rough examples; the state’s base tax for RVs is $27 (5th wheel), $13.50 (camping trailer), $27 (under 4,500 lb) and $47.50 (over 4,500 lb), and other fees are added. See our registration renewal guide.
- Driver license fee: their page says $54.25 for a Class E, “effective July 23, 2009.” Today FLHSMV lists $48 for an original or renewal Class E, and tax collector offices add a $6.25 service fee, which happens to total the same $54.25.
- Their vehicle registration page cites the Escambia tax collector at an old web address. The county’s current site is escambiataxcollector.com.
What Florida and Escambia County say (checked 30 Oct 2026)
- Two Florida residential address documents for a license. FLHSMV’s What to Bring page asks for two different documents with your Florida residential address, and many (utility bills, car payment books, government mail) must be dated within the last 60 days. It says the state “will no longer accept out-of-state or U.S. territory addresses” for a Class E license or ID. The Escambia Tax Collector adds that each proof has to come from a different source, and that a Florida license cancels your other state’s license.
- Appointments only. Escambia County’s tax collector says all services are by appointment, booked with a cell phone that can get texts, one appointment per person. Driver license and ID work is done at the Downtown (213 Palafox Place), Brentwood (5045 N Palafox St), Warrington (4051 Barrancas Ave) and Molino offices, open 8:30am to 4:30pm weekdays. Driving exams are for Escambia County residents only.
- New address rule for vehicle registration. The Escambia tax collector’s vehicle and new-resident pages carry a notice marked “Effective October 1, 2026”: a registration needs “the street address of the owner’s permanent Florida residence or permanent place of business in Florida,” and the only exception named is active-duty military stationed outside Florida. The same notice lists the ID it accepts for a registration: a REAL ID license or ID from any state, or a valid passport. The notice doesn’t say how it treats a mail service street address. Call the tax collector before you drive to Pensacola to register an RV with this address.
- Fees (FLHSMV fee table tonight): $225 initial registration fee the first time a vehicle is registered in Florida without a plate to transfer; Escambia says it applies to private cars, motor homes and trucks under 5,000 lb, so travel trailers and 5th wheels don’t pay it. $28 for a plate; $85.25 electronic title for a used vehicle.
- Insurance. Escambia requires proof of Florida insurance from a Florida agent or broker with at least $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability to buy or renew a plate, and it must be in force on the registration date. Mobile homes and trailers are exempt from that rule.
- Plates and titles. Florida plates are issued for ten years. If a lender holds your title, Escambia lets you start the out-of-state title transfer online.
Voting and jury duty
The Escambia County Supervisor of Elections says you’re eligible to register there if you are “a legal resident of Escambia County,” and that “it is a felony to vote in a precinct that is not your legal residence.” Florida’s Division of Elections, in opinion DE 18-09 (2018), said a residence “cannot be a commercial mailbox” and that mail-service customers with no past or present physical presence in a county are “most likely not legal residents” of it for voting. That opinion was about a Clay County service, but the reasoning is statewide. So American Home Base saying no to its street address for voter registration lines up with the state. If voting matters to you, call the Escambia elections office before you register. Florida draws jurors from driver license and ID records, and Unlimited emails you when a jury summons arrives. More: voting by mail for RVers and jury duty for full-time RVers.

Is American Home Base the right pick?
- It fits if you want a low, simple price with every fee posted, a real person on the phone, and mail shipped on a set schedule. Unlimited is a good match if you move often and want mail more than once a week.
- Think twice if you want to see your mail on your phone: scans are $2.50 a letter and there’s no app mentioned. Also think twice if you plan to register an RV in Escambia County before the tax collector confirms the new street address rule.
- Want scans and an app instead? App-style mailboxes like Traveling Mailbox or iPostal1 are built for reading mail on your phone, but they aren’t meant to be an RV domicile address.
- Not set on Florida? Compare states in our SD vs Texas vs Florida domicile guide.

Basic is $12.50 a month or $150 a year, and Unlimited is $17.50 a month or $189 a year. Add a one-time $10 setup fee, a $20 postage deposit, and postage plus $2 on each domestic shipment.

Does it take packages?
Yes. Its FAQ says it signs for parcels and forwards them with your next mailing, with no charge for packing supplies. Combining several packages into one is $5.
