Snowbird and RV mail forwarding: which option fits how you travel
If you head south for the winter, or live in your RV part of the year, the right mail setup depends on one question: do you still have a house with a mailbox? If you do, the Post Office has three tools that may be all you need. If you don’t, or you’re gone longer than USPS allows, you need an RV mail service. Every price and rule below comes from the Postal Service’s or the provider’s own pages, checked on 14 Oct 2026.

The three USPS tools, in plain words
Hold Mail (short trips)
USPS holds your mail at your local Post Office for at least 3 days and up to 30. You can set it up as much as 30 days ahead, online after you verify your identity, or with Form 8076 at the counter. When it ends, the carrier delivers everything at once or you pick it up. Over 30 days, USPS says to use forwarding instead.
Temporary change of address (one place for the season)
USPS says to use a temporary change of address if you’re relocating for 15 days up to a year. Under the Postal Service rulebook (Domestic Mail Manual 507, section 2.1.3), the first order covers 15 to 185 days. To go longer, you file a second order starting on day 186, and the total can’t go past 364 days. Every temporary order needs a start date and an end date. Allow at least 7 to 10 business days for it to kick in.
First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage are forwarded free. Magazines are forwarded free for 60 days if the sender prepaid. Media Mail is forwarded but you pay the shipping, and advertising mail isn’t forwarded unless the sender paid for it.
Premium Forwarding Service Residential (one weekly box)
Your Post Office packs up all your mail and ships it to you once a week by Priority Mail, usually on Wednesdays, and emails you the tracking number even if the box is empty. Priority Mail Express and Registered Mail are rerouted right away. You can add or drop weeks if your plans change.
- Price: $26.40 enrollment online or $28.70 at the Post Office (non-refundable), plus $29.70 for each week.
- Quick math: a 16-week winter, enrolled online, is $26.40 + (16 × $29.70) = $501.60. Twenty-six weeks is $798.60.
- You can’t stack it. USPS won’t run Premium Forwarding while you have an active change of address or Hold Mail on file, so cancel those first.
- Who can’t use it. The rulebook (DMM 508, section 7.2.5) excludes primary addresses at a commercial mail receiving agency, an RV park, a trailer park, a hotel or a hospital, and business addresses. It’s for regular home street delivery or a small personal PO Box.
What USPS forwarding won’t fix
- Sensitive mail often isn’t forwarded at all. USPS says government agencies and financial companies don’t allow forwarding of things like driver licenses, voter registration, credit cards, bank statements, insurance and medical papers. Change your address with those senders directly before you leave.
- A change of address only changes it with the Post Office. USPS is clear that telling your bank, insurer, DMV and everyone else is on you.
- Mail to a mail receiving business isn’t forwarded by USPS. If your address is a box at a mail service (a private mailbox, often called a PMB), the Post Office won’t forward it (DMM 507, section 2.2.7). The mail service has to remail it to you with new postage. That’s exactly what RV mail services are set up to do.
RV mail services for snowbirds and full-timers (checked 14 Oct 2026)
These give you a permanent address that stays put while you move, and they ship your mail in a batch wherever you tell them. A few have options built for people who are only on the road part of the year.

Snowbird math, side by side: four months of USPS Premium Forwarding (about 17 weeks online) is $26.40 + (17 × $29.70) = $531.30, and you keep your home address. An Escapees 4-month temporary account is $60, plus Escapees membership, the $50 postage deposit and the enrollment fee unless the promo covers it, but it’s a new address you’d give your senders. Which is cheaper overall depends on how much mail you get and how long you’re gone.
RV specialist or app mailbox?
- RV services (Escapees, America’s Mailbox, St. Brendan’s Isle) are built to ship a bundle of real mail to a campground, a friend’s place or General Delivery. They talk about domicile states by name and help with the paperwork that goes with them.
- App mailboxes like Traveling Mailbox scan your envelopes so you can read mail on your phone and only ship what matters. Traveling Mailbox doesn’t sell a Texas, Florida or South Dakota domicile package. Many snowbirds who keep a house just want the scanning.

Checks while you’re away
Traveling Mailbox will endorse a check “For Deposit Only” and mail it to your bank for $4.95 plus postage. RV forwarders usually put the paper check in your next batch, which is slower. Many banks’ phone apps take a photo deposit, but that’s up to your bank, not your mail service. More on checks and packages.
Snowbird checklist before you pull out
- Decide: gone under 30 days (Hold Mail), one stop for the season (temporary change of address), moving around with a house back home (Premium Forwarding or an app mailbox), or no house (RV mail service).
- Change your address directly with your bank, credit cards, insurance, DMV and pharmacy. USPS forwarding won’t carry most of their mail.
- Set the end date. Temporary changes of address need one, and anything over 185 days needs a second order.
- Cancel any Hold Mail or change of address before you sign up for Premium Forwarding.
